Welcome to the exhibition opening of Helgi Hjaltalín at Himinbjörg Art House on Saturday, September 16th, 2023 at 3:00 PM.

The exhibition of Helgi Hjaltalín Eyjólfsson at 3Walls Art-space, Himinbjörg, Munaðarhól 25-27, Hellissandur, opens on Saturday, September 16th, 2023 at 3:00 PM. Helgi will also give a lecture about his works at the Spaghetti Church on Sunday, September 17th, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. All interested parties are encouraged to attend. The exhibition concludes on Sunday, October 1st, at 6:00 PM. Open Thursday – Sunday from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Helgi Hjaltalín is nationally renowned for his distinctive works, often addressing the precariousness of the self in our society. He is educated from MHÍ, and from there, his path led to Dusseldorf, then to Holland, and finally to the Art Institute in San Francisco. After his studies, Helgi has dedicated himself to visual arts and related activities.

“The woman I worked with often said, ‘The sun destroys everything.’ She didn’t elaborate on what she meant or why she felt compelled to put it that way. These words had a strong impact on me and still haunt me. After all, the sun is a destructive force and will eventually destroy everything, and it would have done so if we didn’t have the atmosphere to protect us. Is it my duty to teach that? I wonder, is the world dismantling its protective shell and the entire ecosystem? This thought was nonetheless the beginning of that black hole in my consciousness that will possibly devour everything. It’s a kind of innate certainty that most, if not all, unfortunate events are meant for me to learn from. A sort of backbone of the emotional life. I don’t know if everyone feels this way, but I believe that we are all receptive to accepting the collective conscience of the world,” says Helgi when I ask him about the content of the exhibition.

Based on this, one can say about humanity that it is driven by an innate impulse of self-destruction in its insatiable creative need, which manifests itself in our consumption patterns and lifestyles. The abundance of production and self-indulgence in the form of, for example, solar journeys, ultimately lead her to her beautiful death rose, i.e., the destructive power of the sun.

Helgi’s works at the exhibition are multi-printed prints. The original images that were mostly worked on are largely disappeared in the over-processing that has been done. The prototypes then become a kind of sacred image, about human consumption and annihilation.

The exhibition will be open Thursday – Sunday from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The exhibition concludes on Sunday, October 1st, at 6:00 PM.
