Peter Lang

Visual artist

Peter Lang, a seasoned visitor and now resident of Hellissandur, draws profound inspiration from the unique interplay of light and landscape in the westernmost part of Snæfellsnes. His paintings capture the mesmerizing hues and nuances shaped by both the glacier and the vast horizon of the sea, presenting them as visual symphonies of light and color.

Peter’s artistic journey extends beyond traditional landscape painting; his works are vibrant, independent entities that reflect his deep experiential connection with nature. His approach can be linked to Greenberg’s formalist theory, particularly the high modernist idea that art should use its distinctive methods to critique and solidify its own essence within its field.

Incorporating age-old techniques of tempera and oil with contemporary methods, Peter’s art stands firmly within the European tradition, continually pushing creative boundaries. His paintings are not just landscapes but exquisite symphonies of color that capture the magical interplay of light unique to Hellissandur.

Last summer, Peter built a house in Hellissandur, which serves as his studio, research center, and family sanctuary. Here, he immerses himself in the enchanting environment that fuels his creativity, finding it the ideal locale for exploring the dynamic interactions of light and color.

At Himinbjorg, where myth meets art, Peter’s works resonate deeply. Himinbjorg, named after the mythical dwelling of Heimdall by the rainbow bridge Bifröst, symbolizes a bridge between the physical world and the realm of imagination, essential for creative exploration. We are privileged to showcase Peter’s works in such a fitting setting, where they bridge the gap between worldly perception and the power of artistic imagination.
