Peter Lang

Peter Lang has been a frequent visitor to Hellissandur for some time. He has been captivated by the area and is particularly fascinated by the light here. In his paintings, he captures the colors he finds in the light and the interplay of hues, the nuances created both by the glacier and the vast horizon of the sea.

It could be said that Peter’s paintings are visual symphonies of the myriad shades of light and color offered by the westernmost part of Snæfellsnes. Peter has also turned his gaze to the land from the viewpoint of the ocean. He sailed around the country on a ship and painted it.

In recent years, Peter has developed a deep affection for Hellissandur and built himself a house there last summer, which has now become his studio and research center, as well as a sanctuary for him and his family. Here, he spends several months at a time, both in winter and summer, in the place he considers the most magnificent in the world when it comes to magical light and color play. Peter is not painting mere landscapes; his paintings are independent entities reflecting his experience of nature. One might say that Greenberg’s formalist theory of art fits here to some extent. For example, the high modernist theory that the essence of modernism lies in applying the distinctive methods of the art form to critique the art form itself, not to overthrow it but to establish it more firmly in its own field of competence.

Peter’s methods and materials are based on an age-old tradition of tempera and oil. His painting technique is more contemporary, and Peter firmly stands in the European tradition of art, using his knowledge to advance methods in his creativity. The result is exquisite symphonies of color on canvas. We are delighted to have Peter’s works here at Himinbjorg, where the name has a reference to our mythical heritage. Himinbjorg is the dwelling place of Heimdall by the rainbow bridge Bifröst, where he guarded the bridge and thus the access to Valhalla. It can be said that here at Himinbjorg is a place between worlds, the bridge between worldly perception and the power of imagination, which is the prerequisite for fertile thinking.
