About Us

Himinbjörg is a visual art center and private art studios located in the historical village of Hellissandur at the doorstep of Snæfellsjökull National Park

Combining Art & Education Since 2012

Himinbjörg is managed by the artist couple Bjarni Sigurbjörnsson and Ragnheiður Guðmundsdóttir.

Both are educated as visual artists and teachers and have decades of experience in art creation and dissemination. In 2022, they realized a long-held dream to establish The Himinbjörg Art House in a beautiful rural setting by purchasing a commercial property in Hellissandur, which they transformed into a visual art center and private studios.

Our Vision

Himinbjörg is a place where the worlds of imagination and preception interact and join forces. However, beyond the tangible settings and artistic communities lies a deeper source of inspiration. The true canvas lies in the wordless landscapes and vistas of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. These landscapes serve as the backdrop behind the artist’s creativity, the very foundation upon which the color palette is developed, and artistic vision is conveyed.

Himinbjörg – The celestial abode of Heimdall

In Himinbjörg, referring to the celestial abode of Heimdall, the god who guards Bifröst, the rainbow bridge that connects Midgard (the world of humans) with Asgard (the realm of the gods), one finds solace and inspiration. While Heimdallur keeps watch for any signs of impending danger, especially during the events leading up to Ragnarök, the end of the world in Norse mythology, or Götterdämmerung as the Germans have named it, Himinbjörg is a sanctuary for art, a place where dreams take flight amidst the swirling mists and ethereal light of the past and present.

Our Community at Hellissandur

Hellissandur is a charming fishing village located on the northern coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland, known for its dramatic natural beauty and rich maritime history. With a population of just over 400 residents, this small community boasts a close-knit atmosphere where tradition and modernity blend seamlessly.

Nestled at the foot of the majestic Snæfellsjökull glacier, Hellissandur is surrounded by rugged landscapes that inspire and invite exploration. The village is not only a gateway to Snæfellsjökull National Park but also a haven for nature enthusiasts who come to enjoy the outdoors and connect with raw nature.

In recent years, Hellissandur has also gained recognition for its vibrant arts scene. The village hosts several cultural events and workshops throughout the year, drawing artists and visitors from across the country and beyond. Key venues like The Freezer Culture Center, Saltport Artist Residency, Hvítahús Artist Residency, The Spaghetti Church Museum of contemporary art, and Bjarkey’s Book Store (across the street from us) play a pivotal role in enriching the local cultural landscape by offering a diverse range of artistic and cultural activities. These institutions have become integral parts of Hellissandur, making it a dynamic hub for the arts.
